2.7 - How Does Marine Erosion Effect Itself? Flashcards

1
Q

Moeraki Boulders, NZ

A

Unusual mudstone concretions clumps of sediment bound by calcite cement.
Shape hasn’t been rounded by erosion, but erosion has made it vulnerable by eroding surrounding chit.
Largest are 7 tonnes and 2m wide

Q

Hydraulic Action

A

Air in cracks is compressed, the pressure from this cracks rock open. Process disolodges from cliff face, happens in fissured/sedimentary rock.

Q

Abrasion

A

Sediment picked up by waves and chucked at cliff, the surface is thus chiseled away.

A

Rocks bang together, as this happens they get smoother, smaller and rounder.

Q

Effects Of One Process

A

High energy storm waves, leading to destructive waves, increasing erosion.
Sandstone, chalk and clay are eroded away and broken down easily into slit and sand grain.

Q

Interaction Of Processes

A

When attrition occurs, rocks breakdown into smaller, rounder rocks, which turns into loose sediment, which require less energy to launch therefore causing even more rocks to get chucked at the cliff face.
Hydraulic action causes the rocks to explode, creating more fissures and joints in the rock.
