2.3 - Why Is The Causeway So Irregular Flashcards
1
Q
Collonade
A
Well jointed rock that is difficult to erode but if water gets into fractures/joints then it becomes easier to erode.
2
Q
Entabluture
A
The entablature overhangs the collonade as the collonade gets eroded. However if saturated it becomes heavier and mass movement might occur as the entabluture will become unsupported.
3
Q
Complex Cliff Profile (Giant Causeway)
A
Middle basalt headlands are prone to the toppling of basalt columns. Well jointed colonnade allows water to percolate behind reaching laterite. The overloading basalt and saturated laterite leads to rotational failure.
