4.1 - Porbillantrae (Hard Engineering) Flashcards
Hard Engineering
The aim is to completley alter the coastline to prevent these processes from occuring to slow down through encouraging processes such as deposition.
Hard Engineering Advantages
A one off solution protecting the coastline
Will protect major establishments
Possible income e.g. tourism
Hard Engineering Disadvantages
Coasts are very high
The coastlines can be made unattractive
Can disrupt important physical processes e.g. can prevent LSD
Expensive and need maintenance
Groynes
Wooden walls on the beach, slowing down LSD.
Sea Walls
Use the shape of the wave to direct wave energy
Rip Rap
Large boulders that are resistant and absorb wave energy.
Reventments
Sloped walls that break the strnegth of the wave
Offshore Breakwaters
Rock boulders used to absorb wave energy and dissipate waves
Lyme Regis Coastal Management
Drainage system
Breakwater
Beach material
1000 deep bored pins to prevent landslides
How Did Different Players
Investigation costs up £1.5m
Beach front was closed, loss of tourism
£30m overall costs
Access to car parks was limited
Benefits Of Coastal Management
Better access
More tourism in the long term
Beach security
Portballintrae
734 people on coast, small historic fishing village
Rapid growth since 1970s, 2nd homes, Trump Golf course
Huge amount of beach removal
Portballintrae Geology
Reworked glacial sands
Rocky headlands
High energy waves (fetch)
Main Changes Over Time
1000m2/yr
Sandy beaches now boulder orientated
Why Hasn’t It Worked
Pier diffracted incoming waves creating a low energy zone, meaning waves attack the centre of the bay
LSD from centre to east removing sand
Rip current removes sand –> beach lacks sediment
