  • she was 37, 11 years older than Philip, at the time so unlikely that her marriage would be child bearing
  • she worked on the marriage to Philip II with the Spanish ambassador without first consulting the privy council which was part of the reason it became so unpopular
  • it was thought England would be used to further French ambitions
  • an Anglo-Spanish alliance may also cause the Auld alliance to re-emerge

  • he would also have no claim to the throne and was not allowed to bring foreigners into English government

what happened in the Wyatt rebellion?

A
  • four rebellions were supposed to occur across the country at once
  • due to poor communication only one did in Kent with around 3000 rebels
  • the rebels marched on London and reched Southwark and London bridge but were unable to cross due to crown forces
  • they tried to move up the river towards Kingston upon Thames but within a week the rebellion was put down and Wyatt surrendered at Ludgate

  • there had been a major threat to the capital but it had showed that Londoner’s were in support of Mary
  • it showed the strength of opposition to the Spanish marriage and showed Mary had made the wrong call by not discussing it with the privy council

  • Elizabeth was put in the tower and later proved innocent
