  1. did this to one day before the battle of bosworth field so anyone who had supported Richard could be accused of treason - it was approved by parliament
  2. therefore no one could say that parliament had made him king as that meant they could also take it away
  3. this was after the coronation to distract from the fact she also had a claim to the throne
  4. this made it seem as though God had blessed the union as it was nine months after their marriage - it also united the two houses after the war of the roses
  5. this was like propoganda to show his face around the country
  6. tudor rose starts to appear everywhere - he also built a chapel on the side of westminster abbey to show the connection between him and the state

  • Lovell was a viscount who supported Richard III
  • after the battle they seek sanctuary in a church in Colchester
  • 1486 they emerge and form some troops but it fails

  • 1492: France
  • 1495: support from English noblemen
  • 1495: Scotland
  • 1497: battle and Warbeck captured
  • 1499: Warbeck’s death

  • pretended to be the Duke of York, younger of the two princes
  • 1491: Henry tries to arrest Warbeck in Ireland under the protection of the Earl of Kildare - felt vulnerable so fled to France
  • 1492: Charles VIII of France at the time was trying to annex Brittany so supported Warbeck’s claim but then treaty of etaples (Charles promises not to support pretenders) so Warbeck goes to Burgundy where he is welcomed by Margaret and the HRE Maximilian I
  • 1495: English noblemen support Warbeck including Sir William Stanley
  • 1495: Warbeck tries to land in Kent but lack of support means he has to land in Scotland to James IV
  • 1497: James IV invades England on Warbeck’s behalf - Warbeck is horrified and gives himself up
  • 1497-1499: Warbeck is kept at court before he tries to escape and is executed along with the Earl of Warwick who he was accused of conspiring with

* massive threat with huge international support so putting it down was impressive and showed his strength
* he is slowly removing people who pose a threat
* the people of Kent refused to support Warbeck which suggested they liked Henry

Negative:
* it took nearly a decade to remove the threat
* international support showed how at risk Henry was - how many people wanted him gone
* internal treason from Stanley 10 years after Henry assumed the throne perhaps suggested unpopularity
* people were willing to go to war to remove Herny
