4.2.2 - Endocrine System Flashcards
What is the endocrine system
- supplements the work of the nervous system
- regulated the organs in the body
- a network of glands across the body that manufacture and secrete hormones
- the endocrine system used blood vessels to deliver hormones to their target sites in the body
What are hormones
- chemicals circulated in the bloodstream and carried to target sites through the body
- hormones affect the target cells ( they have many necessary receptors fro that hormone)
- when enough receptor sites are stimulated by the hormone, this could cause a physiological reaction to the target cell
What is the pituitary gland
- the master gland: controls the glands which releases hormones, regulating body functions
- pituitary is controlled by the hypothalamus
- pituitary produces hormones that travel in the bloodstream to their target site
- these either cause a change or stimulate other glands to release hormones
- negative feedback stops hormone levels from rising too high.
What is the gland that releases adrenaline & where is it located
Adrenal gland, produced from the kidney.
What hormone is released from the adrenal gland
- Adrenaline and noradrenaline
- cortisol
What is the effect of adrenaline (and noradrenaline) on the body
Responsible for the fight or flight response
What is the effect of cortisol on the body
Stimulates the release of glucose to provide the body with energy, while suppressing the immune system.
Where is oestrogen released from and from what gland
- produced in the ovaries
- located in the reproduction organs
What is the effect of oestrogen on the body
Controls the regulation of the female menstrual system and pregnancy
Where is melatonin produces and released from in the body
Produced in the pineal gland
Located in the brain
