4.2.1 - social learning theory Flashcards
What are the features of slt
- emphasised the importance of observing, modelling and imitating the behaviours and emotional reactions of others
- vicarious reinforcement and meditational processes allow this to happen
- considered how both environmental and cognitive factors influence human learning and behaviour
In what way does slt agree with the behaviourist approach
- mediating processed occur between the stimuli and the response
- behaviour is learnt and nothing is innate
Define vicarious learning
A process in which indirect learning takes place
- the learner imitates the models behaviour based on the positive or negative reinforcement that they receive
What are the 4 mdiational processes
- attention : the extent to which we notice the behaviour
- retention : how well behaviour is remembered
- motor reproduction : the ability of the observer to copy and perform certain behaviours
- motivation : the will to perform the behaviour, usually based on the reward or punishment that was experienced by the model
Identification definition
Attaching oneself to a model because they have the qualities that we wish to possess: we usually identify to people that share similar quantities to us
Define imitation
The act of copying behaviour
Model
Any person that shows examples of behaviour
A03: research support
- Banduras research supported slt because the children copied the models behaviour
- observational learning has been identifies in monkeys: increases the external validity
A03: scientific
A. Strength
- high control increases the internal validity of the theory
A03: ignores the unobservable though process
- limitation
Have to make inferences that are not slash’s reliable
Is reductionist,
A03: research on children
- most of the research support is carried out on children, however the slt is generalised to all people including adults
- decreases the validity of the results.
Aims of bandura
To demonstrate that children are able to learn social behaviour through the process of observation and imitation through watching the behaviour of another person
Banduras method
children between 3-6 were ppts in the experiment.
- before the investigation each child was rated 1-5 based on how aggressive they are at school from their teachers
- ppts split into groups
- group A were showed a clip of someone acting aggressively towards the bobo doll
- group B were shown a clip of someone who ignored the bobo doll and played quietly
- group C were not shown any clip
- after being shown the clips, each child was placed into a room with a bobo doll and toys individually ad their behaviour towards the bobo doll was recorded.
Banduras findings
- children observing the aggressive model, behaved more aggressively towards the bobo doll than the other groups
- the girls were less physically aggressive =, but more verbally aggressive
Badura a03: demand characteristics
Limitation
- the ppts may believe that that is what they are wanted to do, so want to please the experimenters
