4.1 Enzyme Action Flashcards
How do enzymes increase the rate if reaction?
By lowering the activation energy if the reactionary catalyse
What is the active site?
The area of an enzyme with a shape complementary to a specific substrate, allowing the enzyme to bind a substrate with specificity
What does “enzymes are specific to substrates they bind to” mean?
It means that only one type of substrate fits into the active site of the enzyme
What is an enzyme-substrate complex?
A complex formed when a substrate is bound to the active site
What is the lock and key explanation?
The idea that enzymes and substrates bind with specificity and the reaction takes place (in the same way that a key is specific to a lock)
What is the induced-fit hypothesis?
A modified lock and key explanation for enzyme action
The active site of the enzyme is modified in shape by binding to the substrate
