3.11 ATP Flashcards
1
Q
How is ATP suited to energy transfer?
A
- it is soluble
- it releases energy in small quantities which prevents energy wastage
- it has an unstable phosphate bond which is easily broken
2
Q
How is ATP formed?
A
ATP is formed in respiration through a condensation reaction. Hydrolysis of ATP produces ADP by removing one of the phosphates. This hydrolysis reaction releases energy that can be uses in metabolic reactions
3
Q
How is ATP similar in structure to RNA?
A
- contains and adenine bass
- contains ribose sugar
