Q

What are the two ways in which bacteria can be classified?

A
  1. By their basic shapes
rod (bacilli), spherical (cocci), comma shaped (vibrios), spiralled (spirilla) and corkscrew (spirochaetes)
  2. By their cell walls
Gram positive bacteria: purple-blue under the light microscope
Gram negative bacteria: red under light microscope

Useful because the type of cell wall affects how bacteria react to different antibiotics
