(4) STATISTICS Flashcards
What are the 3 types of statistics
Descriptive stats - graphs/tables
Measures of central tendency - mean, median, mode
Measures of dispersion - range & standard deviation
What are the pros and cons of a mean
• Mean
○ PROS
§ Takes account of all values
○ CONS
§ Extreme values affect result
What are the pros and cons of a mode
• Mode
○ PROS
§ Can use for non-numbers
○ CONS
§ Can be >1 and 0, so not representative
What are the pros and cons of the median
• Median
○ PROS
§ Not affected by extreme values
○ CONS
§ Ignores extreme values
□ Not representative
What is standard deviation and what does it mean
Standard deviation - how far a value ranges from the mean
High standard deviation - less consistency
What are the 3 distributions
Normal, negative and positive
What is a normal distribution and what does it look like
Distributions:
• Normal distributions
○ Graph forms bell-curve
○ Most ppl in middle, few extremes
○ Mean median mode all in middle

What are positive and negative distributions and what does they look like
• Skewed distributions
○ Negative distribution
§ Peaks to right
§ Tail skewed to left
○ Positive distribution
§ Peaks to left
§ Tail skewed to right
