What are the 3 steps to peer review?
- Expert in the same field selected, that works for journal the paper was submitted to
- They read paper, looking for mistakes

○ Good = publish
○ Needs review
○ Rejected (one of 2 reasons)

2. Ensures high quality
3. Helps allocate studies
a. £5.8 billion spent on research, ensures money goes to worthwhile studies
4. Article must be peer reviewed to be published in a journal
5. Helps research rating of unis
What are the 4 issues with peer review?
Problems:
• Hard to find expert in particular field
○ If someone is first in a field, have to train a whole new person to be an expert in order for them to be able to peer review an article
• Difficult to retract public study
○ Even if wrong, damage is done
• Peer review does not always spot mistakes
• Unconventional/controversial work often ignored
○ Journals don’t want to be known as controversial
