3.7-4 Forms of Resistance Flashcards
(5) Types of Resistance
- Public Debate
- Benign Neglect
- Resource Diversions
- Problem Expansion
- Sabotage
Public Debate
People challenge the value of the system openly - most obvious form & EASIEST to counter
But: the resistor has an audience to convince of the negatives, this could be dangerous
Benign Neglect
Ignoring the problem, hoping it goes away
Passive-aggressive, difficult to detect
Resource Diversions
Refusing to commit money/staff, sending inappropriately skilled staff (they may not know what skills are necessary)
Difficult to detect
Problem Expansion
Tying up the aims of the system with other larger goals (nothing can be accomplished because the problem is too broad)
Sabotage
Can be deliberate & calculated - users can give incorrect information to designers or not explain something properly
Typically occurs as a last resort because they feel like they have nothing to lose or they feel like they’re not being listened to
