3.7-3 Organizational Sources of Resistance to Change Flashcards
Organizational Inertia
Formal policies/procedures can inhibit change/limit creative thinking
Group Norms
What the “group” thinks
Threats to Resources & Power
Changes can lead to redistribution of power+resources; IT departments have gained more power - they need to explain why they are doing what they are doing
Threats to Expertise
Expertise is a form of power - changes to expertise can lead to resistance (ie. sales people)
The Focus of Change is too limited
Must look beyond the area/department where the change is happening for any unintended consequence
(ie. automation in one department, may lead to more work in another)
Overly Broad Focus of Change
Trying to be everything at once; overly ambitious - this will fail (too many costs)
Employees lose trust in the leadership, leading to resistance
