3.7-2 Individual Sources of Resistance to Change Flashcards
Social Inertia
The tendency of people to continue with certain behaviours because of habit
Doing things in new ways is harder -tasks take longer and require more mental effort
People resist change as a matter of habit
Capability Issues
People question their ability to change (if they believe that a new way of doing things will be beyond their capability and require skills they don’t have, they will resist change)
Feelings of embarrassment/incompetence
Personality traits
Self-Interest
Those who think change will compromise their own interests (both overtly & covertly)
The rise of IT & automation - fear of job loss/wages/power over “their” information
Value of Change
People believe the change is not valuable; are skeptical
This can be easily overcome:
show valid data ie. new system cost xx and will save xx
Fairness Issues & Trust
People will resist change is they feel they are unfairly treated (could come from past experiences or present)
