the process of setting objectives and taking decisions to make the most effective use of an organisation’s resources
what is leadership?
influencing and directing the performance of group members towards achieving the goals of the organisation
what are the roles of managers?
planning, organising, directing, controlling
what is an autocratic leadership style?
decision making is made at the top of the organisation; minimal delegation
what is a democratic leadership style?
decisions are agreed by the majority, more delegation, subordinates given more control
what is a laissez-faire leadership style?
minimal input from leader, employees are empowered to make most of the decisions
what is McGregor’s theory?
Theory X workers - individuals who dislike work and avoid it; lack ambition and prefer to be led
Theory Y workers - consider work as just like rest or play, individuals who seek responsibility
what are some influences on management style?
tradition of the business

what is the tannenbaum schmidt continuum?
model that shows the relationship between the level of freedom chooses to give a team and the level of authority used by the manager.
as team’s freedom increases, manager’s authority decreases.

what is the blake mouton grid?
a grid that is based on concern for people and concern for task.
