Q

viral meningitis

A
  • typically caused by enterovirus
  • usu virus runs its course and they get better
  • don’t see too many with viral infections in the hospital

9
Q

long term problems after meningitis?

A

scarring of the meninges

  • get blockages (intermittent or permanent) preventing flow of CSF
  • pt may need a shunt if it’s bad enough

Q

What do blockages preventing the flow of CSF cause?

Q

What do you need to pay attn to if a pt has a VP shunt?

A

headaches and other changes they had before (can become clogged or kinked) due to CSF buildup

16
Q

most common cause of encephalitis

A

viral

17
Q

Why is it better to have meningitis over encephalitis?

A

typically doesn’t cause as many neurological issues

18
Q

What is encephalitis?

A

inflammatory response inside the brain

19
Q

Why is encephalitis such a bad thing?

A

nowhere for the brain to go within the cranial vault

20
Q

s/s of encephalitis

A
  • headaches
  • bad sensitivity to light
  • fever, achy, malaise
  • more neuro symptoms because the entire brain is having issues
  • quick decline in status
  • anything the brain controls could cause s/s
21
Q

What things may be affected when an encephalitis pt begins to decline quickly?

A
  • confusion
  • seizures
  • nausea/vomiting
  • vision
  • hearing
  • motor control
  • sensory

*go to stupor/coma quickly

22
Q

scarring and encephalitis

A
  • same problems as with meningitis

- now, the ventricles can scar and more widespread

23
Q

What are encephalitis pts treated with?

A

tons of steroids that can make it through the BBB

24
Q

What happens if swelling gets really bad, brain swells into the foramen magnum?

A

uncal herniation

*worst case scenario

25
Q

recovery from an uncal herniation

A
  • can get it to unherniate and they can recover

- usually hard to keep them alive due to damage

26
Q

Where can meningitis/encephalitis come from? (environment)

A

can get from pools that aren’t properly maintained

27
Q

What can result from pushing the brain against the skull?

A
  • diffuse axonal injury
  • skull isn’t smooth on the inside
  • when the brain hits the skull, these projections may damage important things (or may not)
28
Q

diagnostic tool to see if the brain is still working?

A

EEG: electroencephalogram
