3.1 Flashcards
Community
All organisms that live together in a place
Community Ecology
Study of interactions among population in an environment
Niche
Abiotic and biotic resources that a species uses
What, where, when, and how they use them.
Fundamental Niche
The potential use of resources
Realized Niche
The resources a species actually uses
Gause’s Competitive Exclusion Principle.
No two similar species can occupy the same niche at the same time.
What would happen if two species share the same niche
There would be competition for resources, one of the species are likely to go extinct.
There are How Many Interspecific Interaction
6
Competition
Both species are getting negative impacts.
Mutualism
Both species are getting positive outcomes.
Commensalism
One species is having positive outcomes while the other doesn’t receive either negative or positive.
Predation/Herbivory/Parasitism
On species is getting a positive outcome while the other is getting negative.
Barnacles growing on a whale and filter food from the water as the whale swims. They do not affect the whale. This is what type of interaction.
Commensalism
Facultative
Receive benefits from but can survive without the other.
Ex: Bee & Flowers
Obligatory
Species are entirely dependent on each other.
Ex: Fig wasp & Fig fruit
