3- Zoonoses in companion animals Flashcards
Define zoonosis
zoonoses are diseases and infections which are naturally transmitted between vertebrae animals and man
Implications of zoonoses to the vet profession
Risk of becoming infected by a zoonosis is high for vets
Clients are often unaware of the risks
Legal ramifications if a client becomes affected and ‘never told’
Why do “we” recommend worming dogs and cats every 3-6 months
reduce the burden of worms in the environment, does not cure the animal
Name 3 zoonoses in companion animals
Toxoplasma
Cryptosporidium
Giardia
Name a zoonotic disease which is part of the canine infectious respiration disease (CIRD) complex (also called kennel cough)
Bordatella bronchiseptica
Name the important factors of the kennel cough vaccine
intranasal, live vaccine which aerosolises- potential zoonosis
Always discuss if client is immunocompromised
What are the main zoonosis transmitted by the following: foxes, badgers, small rodents and bats
Foxes= echinococcus granulosus
Badger- mycobacterium bovis
Small rodents= borellia burgdorferi
Bats= europena bat lyssavirus
Name the 4 aspects of control guidelines for zoonoses transmission
Elimination- excluding wildlife, cleaning
Engineering controls- ventilation, washing equipment
Administrative controls- hand washing, rules/ guilines/ procedures
PPE- last defense
Which animals does salmonella affect
any animal with an ‘intestinal tract’
survives in frozen meat
why is salmonella able to survive bleach
because it forms a biofilm
How is Psittacosis spread
Affects birds
airborne particles of respiratory secretions, dried faeces or feather dust
What zoonotic fungi is common in clinically healthy rabbits
Encephalitozoon caniculi
T/F echinococcus multicularis is a notifiable disease
True
What zoonotic disease do Ixodes spp of tick carry
Borellia burgdorferi (Lyme disease)
How is leptospirosis spread
Direct or indirect contact with urine of affected animals
