1- Poultry lecture 1 Flashcards
What is a important consideration in birds when depopulation/catching is occurring?
Very stressful event due to not being exposed to many people in life is identified as a major source of stress & Injury
Needs to be handled correctly = caught by both legs, inverted, 3 birds by hand, placed into crates = Legal requirement.
What are the laws regarding the transport of poultry to the abattoir
All personnel involved with slaughter or killing must be trained
Only those animals that are fit should be caught, loaded and transported to the slaughterhouse
Any handling of animals prior to slaughter must be done with consideration for the animal’s welfare
Name 3 advantages of mechanical harvesting/catching of chickens
Reduced labour costs
Reduced injury/bruising?
Reduced rejection rates
What is a spent hen?
A hen that has completed several laying cycles and is now a market chicken
Retired egg layer
What carcass value do spent hens have?
Low or no carcass value as not in good condition
What are the 3 times birds are generally handled in their life?
As day-old chicks being delivered to the rearing houses
Laying hens, transferred to their point of lay
End of their lives, to be taken to slaughter facilities
What are broiler chickens susceptible to & how is this considered in tranportation
Heat stress & Dehydration
Heterogenous distribution of ventilation in passively ventilated transporters- ‘hot stops’ and ‘cold-spots’
T/F Chickens do not require a FCI
False
Describe the transport of day old chicks
Optimal temperature range of 24-25ºC and 60% RH
Tolerate long journeys (yolk sac reserves)
Generally done in temp controlled containers
Describe the transport of pullets
Journey times for pullets should be shorter than chicks
Well feathered, fully fed and hydrated and free from metabolic disease – high value birds
Describe the transport of end of lay hens
More likely to have Poor feathering – reduced thermal tolerance
Excessively vulnerable to cold and wet conditions
Tend to have longer journeys due to fewer processors
Who does the farmer/poultry producers display the FCI to?
FBO (Who gives it the OV)
What should be on the FCI in poultry?
Farm/house of origin
Intended date of slaughter
Number of birds for slaughter
Flock mortality
Disease diagnosed
Results of any laboratory tests
Any medication given
Previous PM results
What is a CCIR
collection and communication of inspection results
Provides valuable information for the farmer and the farmer’s veterinarian
If an antemortem insp. reveals problems that Aros during primary production farm?
Farmer/ farmer’s vet
