2- Animal by-products (ABP) and specified risk materials (SRM) Flashcards
What are Animal By Products?
Entire body, part of an animal or a product of animal origin which is not intended for human consumption
Name the 3 categorys of ABP
Category 1 = Disposal Only
Category 2 = Unfit for human/Animal consumption
Category 3 = Not for human consumption (Fit for animals)
What are Edible co-products?
Intended for human consumption but require further processing
Carcases containing SRM at the point of disposal needs to go into what category?
Category 1
Which category poses the highest risk to human health
Category 1
Carcases from animals not presented fro AM or without a FCI should be disposed as what category ABP?
Category 2
Animal material (sludge) collected from waste water in ruminant slaughter houses should be disposed of as what category
Category 1
Animal products containing residues of authorised veterinary drugs/contaminants exceeding permitted levels should be disposed of as what category ABP?
Category 2
sludge collected from (6mm) waste water drain screenings in non ruminant (pig and poultry) slaughterhouse should be disposed of as what category ABP
Category 2
Animals killed in context of Transmissible Spongiform Encephalopathies go into what category of ABP?
Category 1
What ABP category can be used in raw pet food?
Category 3
What ABP category do Most of the post-mortem rejections due to pathology go into
Category 2
List examples of PM rejections which can go into ABP category 3 waste
Over scaled carcases
Liver lesions due to ascaris suum
Fasciola hepatica
Disposal Routes of Category 1 ABP
Has to be incinerated
Disposal Routes of Category 2 ABP
Incinerated or
After processing can be used as fertiliser/soil improvers
What are the Exemptions of the ABP?
All can go for diagnostic, education, research purposes
All can feed endangered species
Most 2/3 can feed zoo/circus animals, reptiles, birds of prey
- Feeding approved kennels, maggot farms, hound packs
What colour do you stain category 1 & 2 ABP?
Category 1 = Stained Blue
Category 2 = Stained Black
What label should be on Category 3 ABP?
Not for human consumption
What is a specified risk material? & What happens to it?
Parts of cattle, sheep & goats that are most likely to pose a risk of infectivity if the animal from which it comes from was infected with Transmissible spongiform encephalopathy (TSE)
Needs to be removed from food chains & Destroyed
What Cattle SRM (Specified risk material) is removed in all ages of cattle?
Tonsils, Last 4mm of SI, Caecum, Mesentry
What additional Cattle SRM (Specified risk material) is removed in cattle over 12 months?
As all ages
& Skull excluding the mandible = Including brain eyes & spinal cord
What additional Cattle SRM (Specified risk material) is removed in cattle over 30 months?
As all ages & over 12 months
& Vertebral column including dorsal root ganglia
(Excludes vertebrae of tail, Spinous/transverse process of vertebrae, Median sacral crest & wings of sacrum)
RED stripe on label
In Sheep/Goat identify the SRM material that would be removed in under 12 months of age animals
No SRM
Identify the SRM removed in sheep/goat over 12 months of age
Skull including brain & eyes
Spinal cord
What does a Red stripe label on carcase mean?
Remove vertebral column
Bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) Animal testing requirements
At-risk cattle over 48 months old
- Fallen stock
- Emergency slaughter of animals
- Animals found sick at AM
Brain stem taken by FBO > Dispatched to laboratory
(Carcase, offal, and other by products only realised on receipt of negative test result)
Veterinary role in relation to ABP
Supervises & Authorises Compliance
If a cow carcase test positive for BSE what happens
Carcase and all parts of positive animal as well as all the part of the animal before and the 2 animals after must be destroyed
1b2a
List 2 reasons for ABP control
hygienic production of meat
not in food chain
human and animal health
they are safely and suitably handled and disposed
Describe the dentition of cow over 30 months
5 or more permanent incisors erupted
Describe the dentition of sheep over 12 months
1 permanent incisor
Which animals are tested for Scrapie
only occurs in some abattoirs
suspect scrapie cases
over 18 m DOA/DIL
a random sample of over 18 m old for human consumption sheep and goats
What is sampled to test for scrapie
OV or fully trained MHI removes brain stem and cerebellum
