3-Neck intro brainscape Flashcards
Ascending pharyngeal artery supplies what
Deep aspect of pharynx Palate Tonsils
At what point in the spine does the trachea begin
C5/C6
Blood drainage of the trachea
Inferior thyroid vein to the brachiocephalic vein
Blood supply to the esophage
Inferior thyroid artery
Blood supply to the parotid gland
Posterior auricular artery Facial artery Superficial temporal artery
Blood supply to the trachea
Superior & Inferior thyroid arteries (from external carotid & thryocervical trunk of brachiocephalic)
Blood supply to thyroid
1) Superior Thyroid artery (from external carotid) 2) Inferior thyroid artery (from Thyrocervical trunk of subclavian)
Branches of the External Carotid Artery
*Main blood supply of the neckSome Anatomists Like Freaking Out Poor Medical Students Superior Thyroid Ascending pharyngeal Lingual Facial Occipital Posterior auricular Maxillary Superficial temporal (last two are terminal branches)
Branches of the Subclavian Artery
Vertebral Internal Thoracic Thyrocervical Trunk Costocervical trunk (VIT C)
Branches of the Vagus
1) Auricular 2) Pharyngeal 3) Superior laryngeal 4) Internal laryngeal 5) External laryngeal 6) Nerve to carotid body 7) Recurrent laryngeal PLAN^4
Carotid Sheath
Covers the internal jugular, vagus, and carotids
Carotid Sheaths
cover the carotid arteries, internal jugular veins, and vagus nerve
Cervical Fascia
1) Investing 2) Prevertebral 3) Pretracheal 4 + 5) Two carotid sheaths

Contents of the Occipital Triangle
*Accessory Nerve *Nerves to Levator scapula, dorsal scapular, and LTN may be here *Occipital and transverse cervical arteries
Deep Cervical Nodes
Located within and around carotid sheath *Receive from head and neck via submental, submandibular, retropharyngeal, occipital, retroauricular, superficial and deep parotid, and superficial cervical lymph nodes *Drain into jugular lymph trunks
From what does the right common carotid come off? The Left?
Right comes off the brachiocephalic trunk, left comes off the aortic arch directly (same with the subclavian)
General Investing fascia
Most superficial layer, surrounds entire neck deep to skin and subcutaneous tissue *Goes around both sides of the SCN & trap
How far do the lobes of the thyroid gland extend?
2nd to 4th tracheal rings
In surgery of the thyroid, which nerves must you be careful of?
Recurrent laryngeal Superior laryngeal –>provide innervation to larynx, can cause hoarseness
Innervation of infrahyoid muscles
All ansa cervicalis except thyrohyoid (C1)
Innervation of scalene muscles
Cervical nerves
Innervation of suprahyoid muscles
Mylohyoid : nerve to mylohyoid form inferior alveolar from V3 Anterior belly of digastric: nerve to mylohyoid from IA from V3 Posterior belly of digastric: VII Stylohyoid: VII Geniohyoid: C1 via hypoglossal nerve
Innervation to cricothyroid muscle
external laryngeal nerve
Interscalene Triangle
Formed by scalenus anterior and medius and the first rib *Transversed by the subclavian artery and brachial plexus
