What is an induction box
Used for gas anesthesia
Put cat from carrier into box, hold down lid
Name restraint: keeping cat in one place so it can be examined/ procedure
Keeping cat from falling or jumping
Non-manipulative
Bowl shaped collar that prevents self mutilation following procedures
How far should the neck be from the collar
Elizabethan collar
Two finger widths between neck and collar
What a cat bag is used for
Prevents cat from scratching
Can be used to restrain cats for procedures or anesthesia
What restraint: scruff cat w one hand, hold hind feet w other and pull caudally, brace forearm of scruffing hand behind back
Stretching a cat
What restraint: stretch cat, place side of palm that holds hind legs against medial aspect of “down” thigh
Restraint for femoral venipunture
Where is the femoral vein located
Medial aspect of thigh
What restraint: place hand across throat or scruff, use elbow of same arm to press cats body against your side, w other hand reach thumb across foreleg press and roll vein laterally
Cephalic venipunture
Where is the cephalic vein located
Medial aspect of forelimb
What restraint: hold cats forelegs at elbow and pull straight down, place finger of other hand under cats chin and lift
Restraint for jugular venipuncture
Where is the jugular vein located at
Runs on the craniolateral aspect of throat
What a clam shell is used for
How to use it
Remove litter box
Open clam shell
Enclose cat and pull handles together to close
Can give injection through netting
Physical effects of stress
Breaking nails
Bruising
Falling off table, can result in serious injury
Psychological effects of stress and struggling
Fear/anxiety
Behavioral effects of stress and struggling
Aggressive, defensive (fear biting ) attempting to escape
Ways of reducing an animals stress
Talk in soft but firm voice Encourage animal to come to you first Don’t stare or look in eye for too long Move slowly and confidently Use food if appropriate Pet of animal is receptive
Amount of restraint needed depends on
Temperament
Behavioral signals
Environment
Procedure to be performed
Sources of stress can include
Confinement in cage or carrier (they could even associate this with the clinic) Car ride Sounds, smells, and activity of clinic Medical treatment Restraint
Before opening the cage door, you should determine the cats _____
Do this by
Receptiveness
Audible cues, observe posture, eyes, ear position, tail movement, paw movement
For a non receptive cat you should
Be aware of teeth and claws
Don’t try and calm down. Talk to it and wait for it to calm down
Distract so you can touch it
Move calmly and quickly to retrieve cat
If a non receptive cat is moderately non compliant you should
Scruff or restrain front or back legs OR use bite gloves OR use towel wrap
Name restraint: holding hind foot and scruff head at same time. Some use this restraint when they have to hold down a cat AND give them the injection at same time. Many cats become upset and harder to restrain when this technique is used
Pretzel hold
