10: Eye Examination Flashcards
How to check for nictitating membrane
Press dorsal to lateral canthus, causing membrane to move across eye
How to observe conjunctiva
Pull lids up or down, look for inflammation
Checking for palpebral reflex
Eyes blink when palpebra is touched
Palpebra reflex tests
Nerves and muscles in eyelid
Testing corneal reflex
Both eyes blink when cornea is touched
DONE BY VETERINARIAN
how to test Menace response
Cover opposite eye so animal can’t see you
Bring your hand rapidly towards exposed eye
Should blink
Menace response tests
Wether animal can see through eye
Nerves and muscles in eyelid
PLR how to test
Pupillary light reflex- construction of illuminated pupil
Assessed w pen light
Pupils diameters should be equal and equally reactive to light
Consensual response (PLR)
Equal reaction by both eyes when light is shone in one
PLR= equal but constricted
Equal but dilated
Equal but sluggish
Small
Big
Slow to react
Not equal pupil reactions, note in record which appears abnormal as… (examples )
Constricted OD
Dilated OS
Etc
Sluggish but equal PLR could indicate
Toxicity, head trauma, tumors
Anisocoria
Unequal pupils
Ophthalmoscope
Used by veterinarian to examine retina. Shines light through pupil and lens to retina
STT
Schirmer tear test
Used to determine amount of tear production
To diagnose KCS
