24. Coronaviridae Flashcards

1
Q

MEMBERS OF THE FAMILY CORONAVIRIDAE (2 subfamilies)

A
  1. Subfamily Coronavirinae, contains a substantial number of pathogens of mammals and birds (swine, cattle, horses, camels, cats, dogs, rodents, birds, bats, rabbits, ferrets, mink, and various wildlife species) that individually cause a remarkable variety of diseases:, pneumonia, reproductive disease, enteritis, polyserositis, sialodacryoadenitis, hepatitis, encephalomyelitis, nephritis, and other although infections are subclinical. In humans, from the common cold to more severe respiratory disease— severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) and Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS), which are both zoonoses.
  2. Subfamily, Torovirinae, contains pathogens of both terrestrial and aquatic animals

Q

Which 2 viruses have the following properties:

Virions are pleomorphic or spherical (Subfamily 1) or disc-, kidney-, or rod-shaped (Subfamily 2); 80- 220 nm (1) or 120-140 nm (2) in diameter.

Virions are enveloped, with large club-shaped spikes (peplomers)

Virions have an icosahedral core structure within which is a helical nucleocapsid (1) or a tightly coiled tubular nucleocapsid in a doughnut (2) or bacilliform (bafiniviruses) shape

The genome consists of a single molecule of linear +ssRNA, 25-31 kb in size; the genome is 5’ capped, 3’ polyadenylated, and infectious

Coronavirus virions contain three or four structural proteins: a major spike glycoprotein (S), transmembrane glycoproteins (M and E), a nucleoprotein (N), and, in some viruses, a hemagglutinin esterase (HE). virions of 2 contain no E protein.

Viruses replicate in the cytoplasm; Virions are formed by budding into the endoplasmic reticulum and are released by exocytosis. Cell-cell fusion may occur
