23 Flashcards
Induced response?
A change in a plant trait after attack by a herbivore
Induced resistance?
A change in a plant trait after an attack that reduces herbivore preference or performance
Induced defense?
A change in a plant trait after attack that increases plant fitness.
What regulate induced plant responses?
Hormones
Jasmonate response induce resistance against?
Insects
Salicylate response induce resistance against?
Pathogens
Steps after herbivory occurs that induce induced plant responses?
Cell membranes damaged -> fatty acids released -> -> -> jasmonic acid -> induced response traits
Inducible traits in plants?
•Deterrents: Lignin, thorns, trichomes
•Toxins: nicotine
•digestibility reducers: TD2
•nutrition: photosynthetic proteins, nutrients
How many genes are induced by Herbivory?
2881 genes (10% of genome)
Mustard oil bomb?
Isothiocyanate produced from glycosinolate as it is activated by myrosinase. With glucose added, it creates isothiocyanate. Myrosinase and glycosinolate is stored separately in the leaf and is encountered when the leaf is torn. This save cost of self toxicity. This is highly toxic on herbivores.
