13 Flashcards
Is symbiosis equal to mutualism?
No
Mutualism evolved from?
parasitism with a loss of antagonism.
Secondary loss of antagonism?
Net +/+ outcome for both from hostile parasitic interactions.
Nursery pollination?
Insects visiting flowers to lay their eggs and for their offspring to feed on the nutrients from the flowers.
If nursery pollination kill the plant’s ovules, why don’t plants kill their pollinator’s larvae?
They will kill the larvae that will be pollinators for them, meaning that there won’t be many left.
Therefore, they are breeding their own pollen dispersal agents. This is a plan B
Why do pollinators visit deceptive flowers when only one sex and be used as a nursery?
350 species of fig trees are or are not dioecious?
they are
Male function of fig trees?
Daughter wasp visits male tree with short styles, lays eggs, and you get wasps.
Female function of fig trees?
Daughter wasp visits female tree with long styles with pollen, pollinates it but cannot oviposit (laying eggs), so you get seeds.
Why do fig wasps are equally attracted to male and female figs?
They produce similar chemical scents.
!!!linalool?
Fig odour is composed of?
*Synergism: beta-pinene and linalool.
In fig trees, the more pollinators mean more/less seeds?
Less since because of the mutualistic relationship, the fig trees now invest more recourses into supporting larvae than seed development.
Why is it okay to somewhat kill your pollinators if you are a fig tree?
So you can produce some seeds.
Selective abortion?
If a flower gets too many eggs or too little eggs, they can abort the flower.
