21 Interviews Flashcards
what is a schedule standardized interview/
question wording and order is same for all respondents
what is non-schedule standardized interview?
info desired from respondents is same but working/order of questions not pre defined
what is non-standardized interview?
no prescribed questions
extent of structure and formality differs by?
if use pre-planned questions or schedule, way in which info is recorded, types of questions (choice of ansers vs open ended), extent of control by interviewer (direct convo or more informal exchange)
choice of structured vs unstructured depends on ____
type of info desired (basic data vs conceptualization/interpretation)
advantage of structured?
less time consuming, same info collected for all
disadvantage of structured?
response not recorded in respondent’s own words
advantage unstructured?
responses may have less bias thru interpretation, respondent has some input into research agenda
disadvantage unstructured?
may be more time consuming, not all same info collected for all
this method allows observation of non-verbal rxn, develop closer rapport, but requires travel time/cost for participants (unless skype)
in person, face to face
this method less costly/time consuming, important to establish credibility and trust
telephone
how does selection differ in quantitative and qualitative?
quant: random sampling
qual: select ppl most likely give desired insights
how to recruit?
contact, explain
things to consider for interview?
objective is to gain views of interviewee and not those reflecting interviewer (need ^ validity), need be sensitive/non-evaluative/alert, practice + interpersonal skills necessary to improve competence, may use multiple interviews for more in depth, audio/video recording allows for independent evaluation
what is schedule/answer checklist?
interviewer records gender/age, answers to questions generally during the interview and sometimes afterward (if recording might affect response), and this is less responsive to novel/unexpected turns in interview
what are free form (unstructured) notes?
interviewer records salient information during or after, content is distilled by interviewer into notes
things to consider for “distillation”?
involves judgment/interpretation, produces refined/reduced data, validity not open to scrutiny, info may differ across interviewees
elements of follow-up?
may give copies of findings, ask if interpretation is valid
what is focus group?
group interview where facilitator introduces topics/questions and facilitates discussion, allowing for interaction of participants to develop ideas/responses
why use focus group?
useful in health research for rich source of insights and interpretations
advantages of video recording?
full transcripts, non-verbal data available, accessible to independent analysis
disadvantages of video recording?
intrusive, less disclosure, needs substantial and costly post interview analysis, potentially greater refusal to participate
what are disadvantages of unstructured notes?
bias data in recording, omit data, inaccesssible to independent analysis, needs some post-interview analysis
what are disadvantages of response sheets?
unexpected answers not well accommodated, bias data in recording, inaccessible to independent analysis
what is quantitative analysis of transcript?
count words by participants (relative contributions to conversation), count # pos and neg responses, can be used to test hypotheses
what is qualitative analysis of transcript?
descriptive “ethnography”, provides detailed description of circumstances and encourages reader to interpret, theoretical (attempt to develop and verify theories and concepts)
what is coding and thematic analysis?
to organize data in interview/field notes–>study transcripts, note concepts/themes/ideas to form categories, attach # or label to category and record positions in transcript, use coded transcript to interpret meanings in context
when use coded transcripts to interpret meanings in context, gen. use ___ descriptions of categories and context and may use ___-
thick/detailed; examples from original transcripts
