2017 Microbiology - RNA Viruses and Diseases Flashcards
What family is Rhinovirus from, general disease characteristics, Dx method?
Picornaviruses
Linear, +ssRNA, icosahedral, naked
Infection via nose, outh, eyes.
Coryza (runny nose), via brandykinin and histamine release.
Disease: Common cold
Acute bronchitis in kids less than 2yo.
What are the 2 most common causes for common colds?
Rhinovirus
Coronavirus
What family is Poliovirus from, general disease characteristics, Dx method?
Picornaviruses - Enteriovirus
Aseptic meningitis, encephalitis
varying degrees of flacid paralysis
Dx by culture, serology, immuno-based methods
What family is Coxsackie A from, general disease characteristics, Dx method?
Picornaviruses - Enteriovirus
Diseases: Herpangia Aseptic meningitis Encephalitis Common cold Hand-foot-mouth disease Acute hemorrhagic conjunctivitis Acute pharyngitis or tonsillitis GI sx. in infants Myocarditis/Pericarditis
Dx.
CSF shows lymphocytic pleocytosis for aspetic meningitis
Echocardiography for Myocarditis/Pericarditis
What virus is commonly responsible for infant diarrhea?
Coxsackie A24 virus
What virus is most commonly responsible for Myocarditis and Pericarditis?
Coxsackie B virus
What virus is associated with fever, headache, myalgias, hepatitis w/ jaundice, GI hemorrhage and renal damage?
Yellow Fever Virus (Flaviviridae family)
What virus is associated with flu-like symptoms, break bone fever, and in some cases hemorrhagic fever syndrome.
Dengue Fever (Flaviviridae family)
This virus causes Chronic Hepatitis
Hepatitis C (Flaviviridae family)
This disease causes progressive encephalitis, fever, HA, myalgias, fear of water, CNS sx. and microscopic exam shows viral inclusions and Nergi bodies?
Rabies virus (Rhabdoviridae family)
This virus is transmitted via monkeys. Symptoms include: extensive tissue destruction including liver, spleen, lymph nodes, and lungs. Cell lysis can lead to hemorrhage and hypovolemic shock.
Marbury and Ebola Viruses (Filoviridae family)
This virus is responsible for the common cold and SARS outbreaks. Transmission is via nasal droplets.
Virus typically has halo or corona of club shaped surface projections.
Coronavirus (Coronaviridae family)
This virus is responsible for Summer Diarrhea and epidemic diarrhea.
The nucleoplasmid has a tubular shape that can be bend into an open torus or kidney shape.
Toravirus (Coronaviridae family)
This is virus is responsible for Croup in children and infections of the upper and/or lower RT.
Parainfluenza virus (Paramyxoviridae virus)
This disease is characterized by epidemic parotitis, chills, headache, malaise, sublingual swelling.
Mumps (Paramyxoviridae virus)
