20-21 Flashcards
A biome that occurs on land and not in the water.
Land (terrestrial) biome
A land biome characterized by cold temps, high winds, and small plants.
Tundra
A land biome characterized by little rainfall and extreme temp changes.
Desert
A graph that shows both annual precipitation and temp in an area
Climatogram
A land biome characterized by cool summers cold winters and mostly coniferous evergreen trees.
Taiga/coniferous forest/boreal forest
A physical environment that has certain characteristic plants and animals mainly due to climate.
Biome
A land biome characterized by cool summers, and cold winters and mostly coniferous (evergreen) trees
Taiga/coniferous forest/boreal forest
Land biome characterized by having more deciduous trees,( Trees that lose their leaves in winter,) then coniferous: includes the eastern United States
Temperate forest/deciduous forest
Decaying organic matter that makes up part soil
Humus
The most biodiverse land biome; found near the equator where year round temperatures and rainfall are high
Tropical rain forest
A land biome characterized by moderate rainfall, fields of grasses, and few trees
Grassland biome
A type of grassland that makes up the Midwestern United States; characterized by tall grasses and grazing herbivores
Prairie
A type of grassland found primarily in Africa; has small clusters of trees, large herbivores animals such as giraffes, elephants, rhinos, and hippos, and large cats like lions and cheetahs
Savanna
A biome that occurs in water
Aquatic biome
A freshwater biomes characterized by moving water, such as in river or stream
Flowing water biome
A freshwater Biome characterized by relatively Stillwater, such as an ponds and lakes
Standing water biome
A term used to describe micro organisms found in water
Plankton
A term used describe small but not microscopic organisms found in water that tend to eat plankton
Zooplankton
The area deep in the ocean were no light reaches
Aphotic zone
The area of the ocean where sunlight reaches
Coastal ocean
The area of the ocean where the tide goes in and out
Intertidal zone
An area in the ocean were coral forms a calcium carbonate structure that is home to many different types of organisms
Coral reef
Areas where freshwater rivers merge with the ocean
Estuaries
The largest number of organisms that can be supported to live in an ecosystem
Carrying capacity
Things that limit how many organisms can live in a population
Limiting factors
The movement of organisms into an area
Immigration
The movement of organisms out of an area
Emigration
Limiting factors that depend on the number of organisms in a population
Density depends factors
Limiting factors that do not not depend on the number of organisms in a population
Density independent factors
When a new species comes in with no natural predators and have plenty of food; the population will look like a J shape
Exponential growth
A state of stability in an ecosystem when the populations don’t change very much
Dynamic equilibrium
The total mass of organisms in a given area or volume
Biomass
Is a series of predictable changed in an ecosystem
Ecological succession
