Q

Structure

A
  • two membranes; the outer membrane and the inner membrane. The outer membrane covers it and protects it like skin. The inner membrane folds many times inside which creates layers in the structure called cristae.
  • The folding of the inner membrane increases the surface area, which allows chemical reactions to take place with a bigger space to do so.
  • The fluid that is contained in the organelle is called the matrix.

Q

Location

A
  • eukaryotic
  • cytoplasm: because they continue to move around the cell
  • muscle cells have the most
  • liver cells: does liver deamination, maintaining blood glucose levels, detoxification, and bile production. With all these functions needing to happen a large amount of energy is needed.

Q

problems?

A

Because this organelle is the powerhouse it is a very important structure. It is responsible for creating about 90% of the energy needed to sustain life and support organ functions. When it malfunctions it doesn’t have the oxygen to produce the right amount of energy to be healthy.
