2 Endoplasmic Reticulum Flashcards
Function
Synthesis, folding, modification, and transportation of proteins.
Found
Eukaryotic cells Located in cytoplasm Animal and Plant cells Size depends on amount of proteins produced. NOT IN PROKARYOTIC CELLS
ROUGH ER: name
Ribosomes give rough appearance.
RER: location
Ribosomes give rough appearance.
RER lumen
- site of protein folding, modification and assembly.
- PROTEIN SYNTHESIS: MRNA-NUCLEUS-RIBOSOMES ( on the surface of RER )
- RER transports the protein to the golgi appartus in which the protein gets processed further.
What kind of cells has RER?
Muscles- proteins to keep muscles moving
Pancreas- for Insulin ( large amounts of ER )
White Blood Cells- ( large amounts )
SER: name
no ribosomes
SER: function
-Involved in synthesis of lipids ( creates new cellular membranes )
Cholesterol
phospholipids
-Synthesis of steroid hormones from cholesterol
-Acts as storage organelle- creation and storage of lipids and steroids
SER: Location
Can be found in livers to contribute to detoxification, the ovaries and testes.
BOTH RER AND SER
-They have the same type of membranes
form sacs called cisternae
-Cisternae: where the proteins are synthesized and collected in the cisternae.
-Where proteins are collected and pinched through the vesicles.
