Q

Define an endoplasmic reticulum.

A

A membranous organelle, it’s called rough if ribosomes are present, or smooth if ribosomes are absent

Q

Define an epithelial cell.

A

A group of epithelial cells is referred to as an epithelium. Epithelium is one of the primary tissue often found lining ducts and tubes, and the entire outside of the body.

16
Q

What are the 4 functional characteristics of a cell?

A
  1. Cell metabolism and energy use
  2. Synthesis of molecules
  3. Communication
  4. Reproduction and inheritance
17
Q

Describe the structure of the cell (plasma) membrane

A
  • Lipid bilayer (phospholipid bilayer and cholesterol) (45-50%) that provides flexibility to the cell
  • Carbohydrates (4-8%)
  • Proteins (45-50%)
  • Fluid mosaic model

*The polar heads facing water in the interior and exterior of the cell (hydrophilic); and the nonpolar tails facing each other on the interior of the membrane (hydrophobic)

18
Q

What is a cell?

A

The structural and functional unit of all living things, including humans

19
Q

What are the other names for plasma membrane?

A

Cell membrane, sarcolemma, plasmalemma

20
Q

What are the 5 functions of plasma membrane?

A
  • Encloses and supports cellular contents
  • Controls what goes into the cell and what comes out
  • Regulates intra vs extracellular material
  • Role in inter-cellular (cell-to-cell) communication
  • Production of a charge difference (membrane potential) across the membrane
