2-11 Flashcards
what is osmotic pressure?
water moves from cell membrane from high concentration to low concentration
what is lysis?
rupture of cells
what is plasmolysis?
shrinkage of cells
what direction does the concentration gradient move?
area of high concentration to an area of low concentration until equilibrium is reached
what is osmosis?
water moves through a cell membrane from areas of high concentration to low concentration until equilibrium is reached
what controls osmosis?
osmotic pressure
what is a hypotonic solution?
cell swells
higher osmotic pressure in cell/ low osmotic pressure in solution (moves towards higher osmotic pressure)
high H2O con. outside of cell, goes in
what is an isotonic solution?
H2O and solute concentration in and outside of the cell is the same
no net movement
what is a hypertonic solution?
cell shrinks
low osmotic pressure in cell/high osmotic pressure in solution (moves toward higher osmotic pressure)
High H20 con. inside of cell, goes out
what is a halophile?
salt-loving MOs
what MOs grow at a salt concentration of 3-15%?
moderate Halophiles
what MOs grow at a salt concentration of 15-25%?
extreme Halophiles
what is a MOs that can grow in a high concentration of sugar/salt?
Osmophiles
less than 3% salt
what is turgor pressure?
internal pressure against the cell wall (Prokaryotes)
done with help of water
In what NaCl concentration do most bacteria live?
concentrations less than 3%
