19.5 — succession Flashcards
what is succession?
the process by which ecosystems change over time due to changes in the environment, causing the plant and animals present to change
what can occur as environmental conditions change?
different species can colonise, outcompete, and replace the species that were there previously
what are the two main forms of succession?
- primary succession
- secondary succession
when does primary succession occur?
on newly formed or exposed land with no soil or organic material
when does secondary succession occur?
in areas where an existing community has been removed, leaving the soil intact but no plant or animal species
what is an example of an environment where primary succession would occur?
fresh volcanic lava
what is an example of an environment where secondary succession would occur?
an area that has experiences a forest fire
what are the stages of succession?
- initial colonisation by pioneer communities
- alteration of conditions by pioneer species
- settlement by intermediate communities
- diversification of immediate communities
- development of climax communities
what are the typical adaptions of pioneer communities include?
- ability to reproduce asexuality
- seeds that are dispersed in by wind
- rapid germination
- the ability to photosynthesise
- nitrogen fixation to enrich soil
- extreme condition tolerance
