11.2 — chloroplast stucture Flashcards
what are chloroplasts?
the site of photosynthesis; (they are organelles)
where are chloroplasts found?
they are organelles found in some algae and plant cells. in plants they are mainly found in the mesophyll tissues of leaves
what are the main roles of chloroplasts?
- to absorb light energy to drive photosynthesis
- to convert light energy into chemical energy
what is the external structure of chloroplasts?
a double membrane (outer and inner membrane)
what is the external structure of chloroplasts?
a double membrane
what are thylakoids?
they are flattened sacs containing complexes of pigments like chlorophyll in their membrane to absorb light for the light dependant reaction
what are grana?
stacks of thylakoids
what are lamellae?
they are membranous extensions that connect thylakoids
what is stroma?
a fluid surrounding the thylakoids where the light-independent reaction occurs
what are starch grains?
sugar storers/stores
what are ribosomes?
for protein synthesis within the chloroplast
what is chloroplast DNA?
contains genes that code for the proteins involved in photosynthesis
