formal organisation
the internal structure of a business as shown by an organisational chart
organisational chart
a diagram that shows the different job roles in a business and how they relate to each other
Employee roles in the organisational hierarchy
- Directors (appointed to run the business)
- Managers (controlling or organising within the business)
- Team leaders (resolve issues between team members)
- Supervisors (monitor and regulate the work in their assigned or delegated area)
- Professionals (positions for staff with high levels of qualifications and experience)
- Operatives (skilled workers who are involved in the production process or service provision)
- General staff (variety of positions in business that are carried out by staff with non-specific skills)
hirearchy
the order or levels of responsibility in an organisation, from the lowest to the highest
chain of command
They way authority and power is organised in an organisation
Span of control
the number of people a person is directly responsible for in a business
Subordinates
People in the hirearchy who work under the control of a senior worker
Centralisation
A type of business organisation where major decisions are made at ht centre or core of the organisation and then passed down the chain of command
Decentralisation
A type of business organisation where decision making is pushed down the chain of command and away from the centre of the organisation
Delegation
The passing of authority further down the managerial hirearchy
Types of organisational structure:
- Tall structures
- Flat structures
- Matrix structures
Tall structures
A long chain of command but a narrow span of control.
Flat structures
There are fewer layers in the hirearchy. The chain of command is short but the span of control is wide.
Matrix structures
Allows businesses to connect people with particular specialist skills. Each individual in the team have their own responsibility.
Authority
The right to command and make decissions
