(16) ALT - LIVER ENZYMES Flashcards
ALT aka
Serum Glutamic-Pyruvic Transaminase (SGPT)
Action: transfer of an amino group between alanine & α-ketoglutarate
ALT (Alanine Aminotransferase)
- ↑ in hepatocellular disorders
ALT
NOTE:
o Fxn: Significant marker in hepatic disorders esp. in acute inflammatory conditions
▪ More liver-specific than AST
o More sensitive & specific screening test for post/transfusion hepatitis & occupational toxic exposure
o Used to screen blood donors
Diagnostic significance of ALT
ALT is used to monitor:
o the course of hepatitis treatment
o effects of drug therapy esp. among pxs w/ chronic disorders
o AST/ALT ratio
o Differentiates cause of hepatic disorder
▪ Ratio >1 → non-viral origin (AST is higher)
▪ Ratio <1 → viral origin (ALT is higher)
De Ritis Ratio
ALT Coupling / 2ndary / indicator enzyme:
LDH
o Monitors ↓in absorbance @340nm → colorless product
▪ Product: Form of coenzyme is oxidized
