15a Flashcards
What determines whether a reaction can occur?
Thermodynamics
What does it mean for a chemical equilibrium to be dynamic
The particles involved are constantly moving and reacting
What determines how fast a reaction will occur?
Kinetics
When the forward reaction rate matches the reverse reaction rate
Chemical equilibrium
What states “at a fixed temperature, a chemical system may reach a point at which the ratio of the concentration of the products of the reactance is constant”
The law of chemical equilibrium
What states that when a reversible process is disturbed, it will proceed in the direction that relieves the stress
Le Châtelier’s principle
Substances that change the rate of a reaction without undergoing any permanent change themselves
Catalysts
A numerical expression of the ratio of the products to reactions at equilibrium. Each concentration in the expression is raised to the power that matches the substances coefficient in the balanced chemical equation
Equilibrium constant
A reaction that proceeds in a forward and reverse direction so that products can change back into reactants and an equilibrium can be reached
Reversible reaction
A chemical system at equilibrium in which all the reactants and products are in the same state of matter
Homogeneous equilibrium
