federal vs state level
federal: the whole country
state level: each state
primaries
help to decide determine the preferred republican or democratic candidate in each state
choix final des candidats
during the National convention
quand USA choisissent leur président
-Election day: people vote for a ticket (president + VP) but in reality vote for a certain number of electors => elector college
-elector college: composed of electors from all 50 states + Washington DC
(as many electors as it has members of Congress : House+ Senate)
prendre ses fonctions
take office
paradoxe popular vote
There is a paradoxe because the candidate who gets the most votes (popular vote) doesn’t necessarily win the election (for instance 2016)
in each state “the winner takes all” rule except Maine and Nebraska (proportional system)
composition des grands électeurs
Electoral college: 538 electors : number of votes based on the number of representatives (depends of the size + 2 senators)
=> results from a compromise to represent the diversity of states (rural/urban states/ southern states where there is a large slave population)
états critiques
swing states, battleground states : key state to be won by candidates
quel a été le vote des swing states
All swing states voted for republicans
porto rico
doesn’t have electors what can explained why Porto Rico was said as a “floating pile of garbage” during a Trump’s meeting by a comedian
critique de Trump à l’égard de ses rivaux
: “the enemies from within”= democrats, election workers (cf Capitol assault)
the main threat with the election of Trump
prosecution of lots of people, freedom of speech because he doesn’t like reporters : forced to name their sources
autocrat
représailles pour les enquêtes et ses mises en examens
retaliations for the investigations and indictments against him
revenir sur
to wind back
prendre position sur
take a stand on
