1.3 gender roles Flashcards
When did Elizabeth Bott conduct her study and what was it called?
Conjugal roles and social networks(1957)
What did Elizabeth Bott find?
there are segregated conjugal roles and joint conjugal roles
What are the characteristics of segregated conjugal roles?
- a tight-knit network off family/friends
- clear differentiation of tasks completed by men and women
- members of external social networks can develop norm consensus and exert pressure
What are the characteristics of joint conjugal roles?
- a loose-knit network of family/friends
- the couple are more dependent on each other socially, less connected to friends and family
- the division of labour is much less clear
- tasks are undertaken by both men and women
What are some societal changes that have impacted relationships?
- the feminist movement
- social policies e.g. Sex Discrimination Act(1975)
- more women in paid employment
What is meant by the commercialisation of housework?
- the burden of housework is lessened by household goods and the introduction of online grocery shopping
What do Silver and Shor say about the commercialisation of housework?
this has led to less of the drudgery and time associated with household chores
What did Young and Wilmott(1973) argue?
that the modern family had become more symmetrical
Evaluation of the view that gender roles have become more symmetrical:
Kan et al = while men have more contribution it was mainly by masculine-defined tasks e.e DIY, gardening, e.t.c
Laurie and Gershuny(2011) = there has been some progress but it’s very slow
What did Laurie about gender roles and ethnicity?
- found the Black Caribbean men do 40% of chores in the home
- the avg white man did 6 hours a week of chores
- Indian men did 7 hours of cooking and cleaning weekly
- Pakistani men do less than a 1/3 of the 24 hours done by their partners
