is physiologic changes that follow 24 hr cycle
influenced by exposure to light
light helps maintain the internal clock
evening comes the body produces less cortisol and begins producing melatonin
Newborns sleep is not influenced by circadian rhythm
Newborns sleep influences
Fetuses are tuned into their mothers Circadian rythm.
FHR and resp rates speed up when mom is active and slow down when she is sleeping
Melatonin
After birth the hormonal conncetion is broken and the newborn must rely on their own internal clocks, no circadian rhythm developed yet
their life revolves around being fed
Sleep/wake States
Variations in the state of consciousness There are 6 states that form a contimuum from deep sleep to crying Two are sleep states: Deep sleep Light sleep Four wake states
Newborn sleep cycles
Stay in active sleep for 25 min
