Age Groups
Neonates - Under 28 weeks Infants - Less than 1 year old (Most dramatic time of physical, emotional, cognitive, social development) Toddler - 12-36 Months (1-3 years old) Preschooler - 3-5 years old School age - 6-12 years old Adolescent - 12-20 years old
Family-Centered Care
- Recognize family as the constant in a child’s life
- Systems must support, respect and encourage family strength and competence
- Needs of all family members must be addressed
Atraumatic Care
- Interventions that eliminate or minimize psychological or physical distress experienced in the healthcare system.
- We as nurses when we interact with patients, we are trying to eliminate distress that we put on that child.
- How to interact with different age groups to not provide undue harm to them because they don’t comprehend things the same way we do.
GOALS
- Reduce separation between child and family
- Give patient and family as much of a sense of control as possible
Enabling and Empowering
ENABLE
- Creating opportunities for family members to display their current abilities and competencies.
- Enable family to still ascribe to their family roles even if they are in the hospital or family dynamics are disrupted
- Meet the needs of the child and family
- Promote confidence in family members
EMPOWER
- Interact with family in a way that empowers families to maintain control over their family lives.
- Empower them to make positive change if change is needed based on their child diagnosis.
- Acknowledge positive changes that result from helping behaviors that foster own strength, abilities and actions.

Parenting Styles
Authoritarian (Dictatorial)
- Parents try to control their child’s behavior and attitude through unquestioned mandates.
Permissive (Laissez Faire)
- Parents exert very little or no control over their child actions. They allow their children to regulate themselves as much as they want. They want to be their child’s friend instead of parents. There is not many rules or disciplines.
Authoritative (Democratic)
- Combination of permissive and authoritarian. Emphasizes the reason for the rules and reasons for certain actions they take as parents. They respect their children as individuals and allow them to voice their objections to standards their parent has put in place. They have rules and standards but give the why.
