A
  • Conducted in a natural setting and uses words rather than numbers to describe experiences being studied.

Q

EBP

A
  • Scholarly problem solving approach that aims to provide clinical care and improve health outcomes based on the best evidence.
  • Research is grounded on the scientific method
  • In nursing EBP is a problem solving approach that integrates systemic search for critical appraisal of the most relevant evidence to a problem, one’s own professional expertise, and patient/family preference.
  • Research
  • Provider Knowledge
  • Family/Patient Preferences
  • Created by Dr. Archie Cochrane
  • Development of database of systemic reviews to help facilitate access to best evidence

Q

Steps of EBP

A

Step 0 - Cultivate spirit of inquiry within EBP culture and environment

Step 1 - ASSESS (Ask a question in PICOT format)
P - Population
I - Intervention (area of interest)
C - Comparison
O - Outcome
T - Time
“In acute care hospitals (P) how does having a rapid response team (I) compared with not having one (C) affect the number of cardiac arrests (O) during a three month period (T)”

Step 2 - Search for the best evidence

Step 3 - Appraise the evidence to help form final PICOT question

Step 4 - Integrate evidence with clinical expertise and patient preferences/values

Step 5 - Evaluate the outcome and measure via effectiveness of practice

Step 6 - Share the results at professional conferences or publications.
