Dermis
Inner layer of skin; made up of primarily collagen and elastin, with sebaceous glands, sudoriferous glands and hair follicles; contains nerve fibers that sense touch, pressure, and pain; also called dermal layer or living layer
Subcutaneous
Located below dermis; made up or mostly adipose tissue and loose connective tissue and blood vessels

Stratum lucidum
Located on palms and soles only; helps corners layer protect what’s below it; makes skin thicker (callouses) for protection
Stratum grandulosum
Made of regularly shaped tiny granules; almost dead cells replace corneum and produce keratin into fibers
Stratum spinosum
Distributes melanin to other cells and identifies antigens; sometimes considered stratum basale
Stratum basale
Deepest level of epidermis; skin cell growth, melanin production, and transportation of cholesterol for moisturizatioj
Melanin
Gives color to skin; eumelanin is brown/ black and pheomelanin is red/yellow
Sudoriferous glands
Sweat glands
Sebaceous glands
Oil glands
