102N.7 The Circulatory System Flashcards
Cardiovascular system
Responsible for the circulation of blood; includes heart, arteries, veins, and capillaries
Heart
Contracts and relaxes to force blood to move through the circulatory system; located in chest cavity
Pericardium
Membrane that encases the heart
Blood
Fluid that circulates through body, bringing nourishment and oxygen to all body parts; carries toxins and waste products to the liver and kidneys to be elimimated
Arteries
Tubular, elastic, thick-walled branching vessels; carry oxygenated blood from heart to all tissues of body; are positioned deeply in body; branch into arterioles
Veins
Tubular, elastic, thin-walled branching vessels; carry blood containing carbon dioxide from capillaries back to heart and lungs; thinner and less elastic than arteries, and places closer to surface of skin; receive blood back through venules
Capillaries
Tiny, thin-walled vessels; take nutrients and oxygen from arteries to cells; take waste products from cells to the veins
Varicose veins
Permanently dilated veins
Lymph-vascular system
Second subsystem of circulatory system; responsible for circulation of lymph; includes lymph, lymph nodes, spleen, and lymphatic vessels
