102N.6 The Muscular System Flashcards
Myology
Study of structure, function, and diseases of muscles
Voluntary muscle
Striated; create movements based on intentional desire; known as skeletal muscles because they’re attached to bones
Involuntary muscle
Non-striated; respond automatically to control various body functions, including functions of internal organs
Cardiac muscle
Specialized tissue found only in the heart; rugged muscle that functions involuntarily; contraction of the heart , which pumps blood throughout the body
Origin
The non moving portion of the muscle attached to bones or other fixed muscle
Belly
Term applied to the midsection of muscle
Insertion
Portion of muscle joined to movable attachments such as bones, moveable muscle, or skin; experiences the most movement when muscle contracts
Contraction
Tightening of muscle
Expansion
Relaxing of muscle
Tendons
Bands of fibrous tissue that attach muscle to bones; allows bones to move when muscles contract and expand
Ligaments
Dense, strong bands of fibrous tissue that connect bones to each other; connects bones in joints
Pronator
Runs across the front of the lower part of the radius and ulna; turns palm inward and outward
Supinator
Runs parallel to the ulna; turns the palm up
Flexor
Mid-forearm on inside, group of muscles that straightens the fingers and wrist
Extensor
Mid-forearm, on the outside of the arm; group of muscles that straightens the fingers and wrist
