102N.13 Chemistry In Nails Flashcards
Chemistry
Study of matter, the physical and chemical changes affecting matter and the energy change that accompanies it
Chemists
Scientists that study the properties of matter, it’s physical and chemical changes, as well as elements and chemical reactions
Chemical reaction
Occurs when the substances of two or more molecules interact and undergo a chemical change
Matter
Anything that occupies space and has weight
Solids
Matter with definite weight, volume, and shape
Liquids
Matter with definite weight and volume but no definite shape
Gas
Matter with definite weight but indefinite volume and shape
Vapor
Gaseous state of certain liquids or solids, formed when liquid evaporates into air
Physical change
A change in physical characteristics of a substance without creating a new substance
Chemical change
A change in a substance that creates a new substances with chemical characteristics different from those of the original substance
Elements
Pure substance that can’t be broken down into simpler substances
Atoms
The smallest complete unit of an element
Molecules
Group of two or more atoms held together by a chemical bond
Compound
Substance formed by two or more different type of elements that are united chemically
Polymerization
Occurs when a monomer or oligomer molecule like with other polymer or oligomer molecules to form polymer chains
Polymer chains
Made up of may monomers that are chemically bonded to form chains; result of polymerization; found in solids such as powder
Cross-linked polymer
Has the benefit of additional strength because of single monomer molecule linking polymer chains together
Thermal initiator
Activated by heat energy; heat comes from an external source couch as clients hand or the air in the room
Catalyst
Substances that control the speed at which the chemical reaction occurs
Inhibitors
Preservatives that keep monomers from curing on their own
Solvents
Substance that can dissolve another substance
Resin
Product that adheres the fabric to the nail in a wrap system
Plasticizers
Additive preventing brittleness, cracking, chipping, or splitting; increases flexibility and durability
UV stabilizers
Additive that absorbs UV light, reducing fading and discoloration
Adhesions
Molecular attraction causing two different surfaces to stick together
Adhesives
Gluelike products that create a bond between two incompatible surfaces, such as nail plate and nail tip
Priming agents
Helps improve good adhesion between two surfaces such as nail enhancement products and nail plate; primer
Monomers
Small single molecule that may be chemically bonded to other monomer molecules to form oligomer or polymer; found in free-flowing form
Polymers
Are up of many monomers chemically bonded to form chains; found in solids such form such as powders
Wrap/ dip resins
Nail enhancement system that contains 3 key products: fabric (fiberglass, silk, linen), resin, and a catalyst; can be applied over natural nails, tips, or over broken nails
Oligomers
Short to medium length chain of monomers that are converted into polymers when they come into contact with an initiator and proper energy source; found in gel form
Photo initiator
Absorbs UV light energy and converts it into energy needed to trigger chemical reactions
