10/28 - 10/30 (Mesozoic LAND and LIFE) Flashcards
What era is Mesozoic? What periods does it contain?
2nd Era of Phanerozoic Eon / Triassic, Jurassic and Cretaceous Periods
Give info on Breakup of Pangea (PART 1)
In Triassic, Laurasia and Gondwana separate / Atlantic ocean separates NA from Africa (Late T) / NA separates SA (Early J) / Europe separates from NA
Give info on Breakup of Pangea (PART 2)
(ALL Cretaceous) / Australia & Antarctica separate / India goes in southern ocean / Greenland separates from NA and Europe / Africa moves towards Europe
Effects of Pangea breaking up?
climate becomes more mild everywhere / water moves more
freely & moisture returns to mid-continents / landmasses move towards poles, breaks polar currents / climate more pleasant
What’s the Sonoma Orogeny?
An island arc system stich to the western edge of the craton
What’s Newark Group?
fault-block basins open along eastern seaboard / The sedimentation along these basins make group / known for Dino tracks
Give Info on Cretaceous Interior Seaway
(Mesozoic) / oceans invade central NA, divides continent in 1/2 / seaway goes from gulf coast to the arctic / Important for NA, rocks contain majority of Dino bones, climate data, petrified wood, etc.
Give info on Gulf Coast during Mesozoic.
A lot of evaporates form during the Jurassic. / Eventually these sediments are buried under classic debris
Give names of landmasses and seaway during Mesozoic. (NA)
West - Laramidia / East - Appalachia / Seaway - Western Interior Seaway
Describe the western region of NA during Mesozoic.
Absolute Chaos! Volcanoes, random islands, land smashing into landmasses / a lot of different rock terrains.
