2
Q

What are fossils useful for?

A

determine environment of deposition / relative age of rocks / evidence of evolution / show climate change / they’re cool

12
Q

Define recrystallization, replacement, and carbonization?

16
Q

Define Dendrites?

A

is mineral growth between layers of rock (looks like fossils)

17
Q

Are all fossils fossilized? Fossil material must be at least how old?

A

NO! / 10,000 yrs old

18
Q

Define Survival of the Fittest.

A

passing on genes by any means necessary

19
Q

Define Evolution.

A

gradual change through time due to mutations

20
Q

How do Mutations work? Are they random?

A

inheritance from parent to offspring. / Yes they’re Random.

20
Q

Define Tetrapod.

A

organism that has a head and 4 limbs. (+ rib cage)

21
Q

1st scientist to propose mechanism of evolution? (taken seriously)

A

Jean Baptisde de Lamark

22
Q

Who proposed Theory of Inheritance of Acquired Characteristics? What is this theory?

A

Jean Baptisde de Lamark / New traits in organisms arise because of their needs (these traits are passed on)

23
Q

Example of Theory of Inheritance of Acquired Characteristics?

A

Short necked giraffes had to struggle to reach leaves on higher branches, and thereby made their necks slightly longer. This was passed to their offspring who also made their necks longer and eventually we ended up with modern giraffes

24
Q

Who is Alfred Russel Wallace.

A

Field Biologist that wrote manuscripts on Indonesian archipelago & amazon rainforests.

25
Q

Describe the major event that occurred between Darwin and Wallace.

A

Wallace sent letter to Darwin (1858) / prompted Darwin to write OTOOS. / They introduced their evolution theory (1859)

26
Q

What is Wallace’s Line?

A

Biographic boundary that separates Asia & Australian animals

27
Q

What did Charles Darwin write? Primary point?

A

On the Origins Of Species. / Natural Selection.

28
Q

What are Darwin’s Finches experiment or wtv?

A

observations that minor variations in traits can be minimized in time when one trait is preferred
